2024 witnessed the 65th Blue Sapphire Anniversary celebration of the Stowmarket & District Flower Club.
The club originated on 27th July 1959, when a group of enthusiastic ladies met at Creeting St.Mary, Stowmarket. They decided to from a flower club, setting the annual membership fee at a modest 10 shillings. Their first official meeting was held at Stow Lodge. Over the years, the club has gathered at the Old Grammar School in Stowmarket, Chilton Primary School and Stowupland High School, and from 1991 onwards at Woolpit Village Hall.
The club has taken part in prestigious shows, including The Chelsea Flower Show, The Suffolk Show, The Hadleigh Show, Bury St Edmunds Cathedral and Ely Cathedral flower festivals – in addition to National and World competitions.
In 1961, they had the honour of arranging flowers for the Queen Elizabeth’s visit to Stowmarket, and in 2002 they prepared arrangements for Her Majesty’s visit to Bury St. Edmunds as part of her Golden Jubilee tour. One member also co-designed arrangements for the 900th Anniversary of Westminster Abbey in 1966.
Most recently in 2023, the club won First Prize in the Club Class at The Suffolk Show.
